PRE-ENGINEERED DOWNWARD ACCESSIBLE FIBERGLASS CEILING SYSTEM
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the contract, including General Conditions, apply to work of this section.
1.2 SCOPE
A. Furnish and install complete downward accessible ceiling system. System shall consist of pre-engineered panels, and pre-engineered, concealed, aluminum suspension system, concealed perimeter accessories, and concealed pre-engineered full access hardware, as well as any other components required to provide a complete system.
B. It is acknowledged, that this is a performance specification. Any proposed system must meet or exceed all criteria contained herein.
1.3 RELATED WORK
A. Examine Contract Documents for requirements that affect work of this Section. Other Specification Sections that directly relate to work of this Section include, but are not limited to:
1. Section 09250, GYPSUM DRYWALL
2. Section 09510, ACOUSTICAL CEILINGS.
3. Division 15, MECHANICAL.
4. Division 16, ELECTRICAL.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer: Firm with manufacturing and delivery capacity required for project, shall have successfully completed at least ten projects in the United States of America within the past year, utilizing this exact system.
B. Firm must own and operate it’s own manufacturing facilities. “Stick Built” systems, consisting of components from a variety of manufacturers, will not be considered or accepted. Firm must have been continuously engaged in similar ceiling manufacturing business for a minimum of 20 years.
C. Mock-up: Erect a minimum, 500 square foot mock-up at the project site or other location approved by the architect including all components of the specified system. Mock-up shall be erected and approved prior to the issuance of a purchase order or contract for this section, unless this sequencing is waived by the architect. An existing New England project, utilizing this exact system may satisfy this mock-up requirement.
D. Reference Standards: Conform to all governing laws, building codes, and the following performance criteria:
1. Fire Performance Characteristics: Provide a ceiling system with surface-burning characteristics as determined by testing full assemblies (component tests unacceptable) of identical materials and construction representative of a typical installation, using factory standard finishes in accordance with UBC 42-2 and ASTM E-84 by a testing organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
a. UBC 42-2 Classification: Acceptable
b. E 84-89 Classification: Class “A” or “1”
c. Flame Spread: 25 or less
d. Smoke Developed: 450 or less
2. Acoustical Performance Characteristics: Provide a ceiling system with acoustical absorption characteristics as indicated in part 2, which have been determined by testing fully assembled production material in accordance with ASTM C-423 (Type E-405 mounting method as defined by ASTM E-795) by a testing organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Approved testing organization must be independent of the manufacturer.
a. Panels shall have noise reduction coefficient values of the following when tested in accordance with the above.

E. The specification clearly calls for and intends for the material to be provided as a complete system from the original system manufacturer. This specification clearly indicates the desire to avoid “stick built” systems by any party, contractor, sub-contractor or others.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s standard product specifications, details, drawings, independent test data and installation instructions for each component required.
1. Test data shall include copies of the original system tests, and independent component tests where applicable. Tests shall be as conducted for the complete system of the manufacturer.
B. Submit three (3) complete sets of CAD generated shop drawings prepared by the manufacturer showing all necessary details and dimension requirements which will be subsequently field verified and revised as required by the Architect.
C. Certification: Submit to the owner a certificate of compliance to specified acoustical and fire performance criteria as stated in this specification, signed by an officer of the system manufacturer and attach independent laboratory test results for each product used, showing that the products supplied as components and complete assemblies, meet or exceed the specified requirements. System manufacturer shall also submit a certificate that products supplied are appropriate for the intended use of the owner and facility. Submit additional test results to owner as requested detailing compliance to updated code requirements.
D. Submission: Must be within ten (10) working days of the general contract award to avoid project delay. It is acknowledged that the specified systems are long lead-time items. If this schedule not adhered to, architect will designate product to be utilized, and contractor will have no recourse.
E. Samples: Submit three each (3) of each system component. Flat components full sized, linear components 12″ in length. All samples shall be from a standard production run from another project.
F. Single Source: All fabric ceiling and wall panels shall be purchased from a single manufacturer.
1.6 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Deliver fabricated units and related components to the site for installation in accordance with a reasonable schedule furnished by the contractor. On-site storage shall be such as to assure that all panels and associated materials are protected from damage.
B. All reasonable effort should be made prior to panel installation to make the site free of all wet and dusty trades and the climatic conditions stabilized to normal operational levels. Panels shall be allowed to stabilize on site a minimum of 24 hours prior to installation.
1.7 SEQUENCING
A. Substitute Products: Alternate proposals for substitute products, will not be accepted unless approved as issued in addenda. Substitute products will not be issued in addenda unless request for substitution and complete and sufficient data are furnished to the architect and owner for review. Samples and data must be received by architect and owner a minimum of ten (10) calendar days prior to issue date of last addenda allowable under current project schedule as determined by architect and owner. Any additional costs incurred due to requested substitutions, will be paid in full by the party requesting substitution.
B. Contract Execution: Submittals, including mock-up. shall be completed and approved prior to award of subcontract for this section.
C. Manufacturer’s Production Schedule: Subcontract for the work of this section shall be awarded to allow sufficient time for manufacturer’s standard production schedule. Subcontractor shall submit a written confirmation of production and delivery schedule on Manufacturer’s Letterhead within ten (10) days of general contract award.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. General: Submit manufacturer’s warranty that the materials furnished will perform as specified, and have been installed in more than 100,000 square feet of similar institutions in the United States of America within the past four (4) years.
B. All system components shall be manufactured and supplied by the named manufacturer. Individual components, provided by individual suppliers will not be considered or accepted. IT IS THE CLEAR INTENT OF THIS SPECIFICATION TO PROVIDE A COMPLETE, FULLY TESTED, SINGLE SOURCE SYSTEM, SUPPLIED, PRODUCED AND MANUFACTURED BY A SINGLE COMPANY IN THEIR OWN MANUFACTURING FACILITIES. IT IS ALSO THE CLEAR INTENT TO NOT ACCEPT “STICK BUILT” PARTS AND PIECES FROM VARIOUS DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS.
C. Manufacturer must demonstrate the ability to fully bond the project for it’s full material value.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURER
A. Products: The products herein specified are standard manufactured products of the listed manufacturer. They are totally pre-engineered, and tested as a system. Products comprised of a non pre-engineered system will not be considered or allowed. “Stick Built” systems will not be considered or allowed.
2.2 ACOUSTICAL ABSORPTIVE CEILING PANELS
A. Furnish and deliver prefabricated acoustical ceiling system as described in this section for installation in areas as shown on drawings meeting or exceeding the following requirements:
1. Description: The ceiling system shall be a completely pre-engineered downward accessible ceiling system. Defined joint (or butt joint) system.
2. Standard Ceiling Panels: The panels shall be type MEAP-1 constructed of 6 to 7 lb. / cu. ft. density, semi-rigid glass fibre core of 1″ thickness and fabric wrapped as detailed in this section. The board shall be free of surface defects and sanded as required to a uniform thickness which will not vary by more than 0.010 inches. The boards shall be fabricated to sizes supplied by the installing contractor using a CAD / CAM (CIM) Robotic Cutting System to ensure accurate panel core dimensions to a tolerance of 0.020 inches. Edges shall be of concealed, mill finish aluminum with adequate web thickness to withstand moderate impact during installation and ongoing maintenance. Edges shall be designed to be fixed to the core, and will be straight and true with no visible deviations when the panels are butted side by side. Edges must be in alignment with the panel face and concealed from view. Soft or non-framed edge treatments are not acceptable. Each panel shall have a vapor barrier backing sufficient to prevent air transfer through the surface. Panel deflection, when installed, shall not exceed 0.27% of the span. All panels shall be clearly text marked with the project I.D. number, location code and quantity of units per size and correspond to furnished and approved shop drawings. A permanent computerized record of all panels and other system components shall be maintained by the manufacturer for a minimum of twenty (20) years from completion of project.
3. Reflective Ceiling Panel: Panel shall be of similar construction to standard panel, but be an acoustically reflective composite panel. NRC shall be no greater than 0.10 with E400 Mounting, per ASTM C423. Panel location shall be as shown on reflected ceiling plans.
2.3 FINISH
A. The finish shall be bonded or stretched over the panel face and edges and returned a minimum of one inch on the back of the panel. The finish shall be flat and wrinkle free and fully tailored at corners with no exposed darting. All finishes shall be tested for suitability and approved for use by the ceiling system manufacturer prior to fabrication. Finish shall be:
1. Manufacturer’s standard woven polyester, color chosen from the manufacturer’s full range of colors or custom color to match Pantone Paint Chips as specified. The fabric shall be manufactured of Fire Retardant polyester yarn. Aftermarket treatments are not acceptable.
2. Architect / Designer Custom selected finish.
2.4 MOUNTING
A. Mounting shall be by means of torsion springs mechanically fastened to the panels and received into the system connectors and pre-engineered aluminum grid members. When installed, the grid members shall be completely concealed with a defined joint at the panel edges to be maintained at no greater than 0.138 inches (or alternately, concealed with a tight butt joint maintained at all panel edges). All panel and system hardware shall be of mill finish aluminum and supplied by the ceiling system manufacturer. (Adhesively mounted clips will not be considered or accepted). All panels are to be individually, downward accessible, with three potential standard positions; down in level plane to extent of torsion spring, hinged down and open, hanging from one side only, fully removed from system.
1. Installation shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and as shown on approved show drawings. Installer shall provide shimming and adjustments as required to maintain consistent alignment of joints and of finished panel faces.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Installation by a contractor approved by manufacturer of materials specified who is thoroughly experienced in this type of work.
B. Examine all surfaces and conditions affecting proper installation of this material. Report to general contractor any defects in materials or surfaces to which this material is to be applied. Commencement of work shall indicate acceptance of materials and surfaces as satisfactory.
C. Install ceilings in accordance with approved shop drawings.
D. Place units symmetrically about centerlines of room or space, or as otherwise indicated. Install joints true and tight fitting. Assure that all perimeter panels are fully engaged by the security molding, and upward motion is eliminated.
E. Completed work shall present a straight level plane, with surfaces free from scratches and other imperfections and disfigurements.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Perform installation in accordance with approved shop drawings. Install wall mount channels, corner assemblies, frames, and complete grid system plumb and end level to within 1/8″ in 10’0″.
B. Field cut openings or notches required in ceiling panels, except openings for light, air, or access panels shown on shop drawings.
3.3 COMPLETION
A. Replace damaged sections, touch up damaged finish. Clean surfaces free from oil, fingerprints, markings and other disfigurements. Remove debris resulting from this work, from project site.
3.4 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Variation from specification: Any variation from any section of this specification, resulting in additional costs to any other contractor, sub-contractor or supplier, on this project, shall be the sole financial responsibility of the contractor for the work of this section.
